Android eSIM Troubleshooting: Complete Fix Guide
Before You Start
This guide covers stock Android devices (Motorola, OnePlus, and others running close-to-stock Android). If you have a Samsung Galaxy, use our Samsung-specific guide instead. For Google Pixel, see our Pixel guide.
Confirm your eSIM is installed: go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs and look for your eSIM profile. If it's not there, install it first.
Work through these fixes in order. Most people solve their issue within the first four steps.
Step 1: Toggle Airplane Mode
This forces your phone to disconnect from all networks and search fresh.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings
- Tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it on
- Wait 30 seconds
- Tap the icon again to turn it off
Step 2: Make Sure the eSIM Is Enabled
Your eSIM might be installed but turned off.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs
- Tap your eSIM profile
- Make sure the toggle to enable the SIM is turned on
Step 3: Set the eSIM as Your Default Data Line
Your phone might still be routing data through your physical SIM.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs
- Tap your eSIM profile
- Turn on Mobile data to set it as the default data SIM
Step 4: Turn On Data Roaming
Travel eSIMs connect through roaming agreements with local carriers. Android blocks roaming by default.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs
- Tap your eSIM profile
- Toggle Roaming to ON
This is the most common fix. Without roaming enabled, your travel eSIM cannot connect to any network abroad.
Step 5: Manually Select a Network
If automatic selection isn't finding a compatible carrier, pick one yourself.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs
- Tap your eSIM profile
- Tap Network operators
- Turn off automatic network selection
- Wait for a list of available carriers to appear (up to 30 seconds)
- Try connecting to each carrier until you get a signal
Tip: If the carrier list is empty, confirm Data Roaming is turned on first, then try again.
Step 6: Check for System Updates
Outdated Android versions can have eSIM bugs that have been patched in newer releases.
- Go to Settings > System > System update
- Tap Check for update
- If an update is available, download and install it
Step 7: Restart Your Phone
A full restart clears stuck processes that lighter fixes might miss.
- Press and hold the power button
- Tap Restart
- Wait for your phone to boot up and give it a couple of minutes to reconnect
Step 8: Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)
This clears all network configurations and forces a fresh start.
- Go to Settings > System > Reset options
- Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
- Confirm with your PIN or password
What this resets: Saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, mobile network preferences, and VPN configurations. What it keeps: Your apps, photos, eSIM profiles, and personal data.
After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi, re-enable Data Roaming, and set your eSIM as the default data line again.
Google Fi and Dual SIM Conflicts
If you have Google Fi installed, it can take priority over other eSIM profiles. Before traveling, pause your Fi service in the Google Fi app or disable the Fi SIM in Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. Then enable your travel eSIM, set it as the default data line, and restart your phone.
For any dual SIM setup, the key is making sure your travel eSIM — not your home carrier — is selected as the mobile data line.
Android 14+ Notes
If you're running Android 14 or later, you may notice updated eSIM management features. The eSIM transfer tool lets you move profiles between devices, but don't use this while troubleshooting — it can interrupt your active connection. The settings paths in this guide match the Android 14 and 15 interface, though exact wording may vary slightly by manufacturer.
