eSIM Stuck at 'Activating' — How to Fix
What "Activating" Actually Means
If your iPhone shows your eSIM as "Activating" and the status never seems to change, take a breath. This is one of the most common iOS eSIM quirks, and it usually doesn't mean anything is wrong.
Here's the key thing to understand: the "Activating" status often means your eSIM is fully installed but hasn't connected to a local network yet. If you installed the eSIM at home before traveling, it's completely normal to see this status until you arrive at your destination and your phone registers on a partner network.
The eSIM profile is on your phone. It's ready. It's just waiting.
When to Actually Worry
The "Activating" status is only a problem if:
- You're already at your destination and it's been more than 30 minutes
- You've enabled Data Roaming and the status still won't change
- You've tried the fixes below and nothing works
If you're still at home or in transit, "Activating" is expected behavior. Move on to the fixes below only if you're at your destination and ready to use data.
Fix 1: Enable Data Roaming and Toggle Airplane Mode
This is the fix that works for most people.
- Go to Settings > Cellular
- Tap on your eSIM plan
- Make sure Data Roaming is turned ON
- Go back to the main Settings screen
- Turn on Airplane Mode
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn off Airplane Mode
Your phone will search for networks. Give it 2-3 minutes. The status should change from "Activating" to showing a carrier name.
Fix 2: Wait It Out
Some eSIMs genuinely need a few minutes to fully activate, especially if:
- You just landed and networks are still being detected
- You're in an area with limited coverage
- The network is processing your eSIM registration
If you've enabled Data Roaming and toggled Airplane Mode, give it up to 10 minutes before moving to the next fix.
Fix 3: Restart Your iPhone
A full restart often clears the "Activating" status when other steps don't.
- Power off your iPhone completely (hold the side button and volume button, then slide to power off)
- Wait 15 seconds
- Power on your iPhone
- Wait for it to boot up and connect to a network
After the restart, go to Settings > Cellular and check the eSIM status.
Fix 4: Check for iOS Updates
Older iOS versions sometimes have bugs with eSIM activation. Make sure your iPhone is running the latest software.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update
- If an update is available, install it
- After the update, check your eSIM status again
This won't help in every case, but it eliminates a known source of activation glitches.
Fix 5: Contact Support (Last Resort)
Do not delete your eSIM to try to fix the "Activating" issue. Once an eSIM is deleted from your device, it cannot be reinstalled from the same QR code. Deleting a working eSIM that is simply waiting to connect creates a real problem where there wasn't one.
If you've tried all the fixes above and are still stuck, contact Only eSIM support at onlyesim.com with your order number and device model. We can check the activation status from our end and advise on next steps. In some cases, we may be able to issue a new eSIM if needed.
Do NOT Panic-Delete Your eSIM
This is worth repeating: do not delete your eSIM just because it says "Activating." In most cases, the eSIM is working perfectly — it's just waiting to connect to a network at your destination. Deleting a working eSIM that can't be re-downloaded creates a real problem where there wasn't one.
If you're unsure, reach out to our support team before removing anything. We can check the status of your eSIM on our end and tell you whether it's active and ready to connect.
Still Stuck?
If you're at your destination, Data Roaming is on, you've restarted your phone, and the eSIM has been "Activating" for more than 30 minutes, contact our support team. Include your order number and the device model you're using — we'll check the activation status from our side.
