Payment Declined? Here's What to Do

A declined payment can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to get connected before a trip. The good news is that most payment issues have a simple fix. Let's walk through the most common causes and how to resolve them.

Common Reasons Your Payment Was Declined

Payment failures usually come down to one of these issues:

  • Insufficient funds — your card doesn't have enough available balance or credit to cover the purchase
  • Expired card — the expiration date on your card has passed
  • Incorrect card details — a typo in the card number, expiry date, or CVV code
  • International transaction blocked — your bank blocked the charge because it appears to come from outside your country
  • Fraud protection triggered — your bank's security system flagged the transaction as suspicious and blocked it automatically
  • Temporary processing issue — a brief glitch on the payment network's side

How to Fix It

Work through these steps in order. Most people resolve their issue within the first two.

1. Double-check your card details

Small typos happen to everyone. Carefully verify:

  • Card number — all 16 digits, no extra spaces
  • Expiry date — make sure the month and year haven't passed
  • CVV/CVC — the 3-digit code on the back of your card (or 4 digits on the front for American Express)
  • Billing address — some banks verify this matches what they have on file

2. Contact your bank

This is the most common fix. Many banks automatically block online and international transactions as a security measure. You may not even receive a notification when this happens.

Call the number on the back of your card and:

  • Ask if they blocked a recent online transaction
  • Request that they approve the charge or whitelist online purchases from Stripe
  • Ask them to temporarily lift any international transaction restrictions

After speaking with your bank, try your purchase again.

3. Try a different payment method

If your card continues to be declined, switch to a different option:

  • A different credit or debit card
  • Apple Pay — available on Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
  • Google Pay — available on supported Android devices and Chrome

Using Apple Pay or Google Pay can sometimes bypass card restrictions because the payment is tokenized differently.

4. Check for fraud alerts from your bank

Some banks send a text message or app notification asking you to confirm the transaction. Check your:

  • SMS messages for a verification text
  • Banking app for a push notification or pending approval request
  • Email for a fraud alert from your bank

If you see a prompt, approve it and then retry your purchase on Only eSIM.

5. Wait and try again

Occasionally, payment processors experience brief disruptions. If none of the steps above apply to your situation:

  • Wait 5 to 10 minutes
  • Refresh the checkout page
  • Enter your payment details and try again

These temporary issues usually resolve themselves quickly.

Your Payment Information Is Secure

We use Stripe to process all payments. Stripe is a PCI Level 1 certified payment processor — the highest level of security certification in the payments industry. Your full card details are never stored on Only eSIM's servers. They go directly to Stripe's secure infrastructure.
