I Lost My Phone With an Active eSIM — What to Do Now
Act Fast — Here's What to Do
Losing your phone while traveling is stressful, especially when it has your travel eSIM on it. Take a breath — then work through these steps as quickly as you can. The most important thing is securing your device before worrying about the eSIM.
Step 1: Immediately Lock or Wipe Your Phone Remotely
This is your top priority. A remote lock prevents anyone from accessing your personal data, accounts, and your eSIM.
If you have an iPhone:
- Go to iCloud.com/find from any browser, or use the Find My app on another Apple device
- Select your lost iPhone from the device list
- Choose Mark as Lost to lock it remotely — this disables Apple Pay and displays a contact message on the lock screen
- If you believe the phone won't be recovered, choose Erase This Device to wipe everything including the eSIM profile
If you have an Android:
- Go to android.com/find from any browser
- Select your lost device
- Choose Secure Device to lock it remotely with a message and phone number
- If recovery is unlikely, choose Erase Device to wipe all data including the eSIM profile
Do this as soon as possible. Even if you think you might find the phone, locking it immediately protects you.
Step 2: Contact Only eSIM Support
Once your device is secured, reach out to us at onlyesim.com with:
- Your order number (check your email for the purchase confirmation)
- The email address on your account
- A brief explanation of what happened
Here's what we can do:
- Check your plan status — verify how much data and validity time remains
- Suspend the eSIM to prevent any unauthorized usage of your data
- Prepare a reissuance for when you have a replacement device
Step 3: Secure Your Only eSIM Account
Sign in to your account at onlyesim.com from another device (a friend's phone, a hotel computer, a tablet). You can sign in using email OTP or Google Sign-In (click Continue with Google). Only eSIM uses passwordless login, so there is no password to change -- but make sure the email account (or Google account) associated with your Only eSIM account is secured.
This prevents anyone with access to your lost phone from logging into your Only eSIM account.
Step 4: Contact Your Home Carrier
If your lost phone also had a physical SIM card from your home carrier, call them to suspend that line. This prevents unauthorized calls, texts, and data usage on your primary number.
Most carriers have a dedicated lost/stolen device phone number you can call from any phone. Check your carrier's website from a borrowed device for the specific number.
Step 5: Getting Reconnected on a New Phone
Once you have a replacement device, contact Only eSIM support about reissuing your eSIM.
Here's how it works:
- eSIM profiles are tied to a specific device — they don't transfer automatically
- If your plan still has remaining data and hasn't expired, we can issue a new QR code for your replacement phone
- You'll install the eSIM on your new device just like the first time
Important: Not all plans support reissuance. We'll check your specific plan and let you know your options. If reissuance isn't possible and your plan had significant remaining value, we'll work with you on a fair resolution.
Check Your Travel Insurance
Many travel insurance policies cover phone theft and loss, including the cost of a replacement device. If you have travel insurance:
- File a police report at the local station — most insurers require this
- Keep all receipts for any replacement device or SIM you purchase
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible with the police report number
Even some credit cards offer travel protection that covers stolen electronics. Check your card benefits.
Prevention Tips for Next Time
These won't help you now, but they'll save you a lot of stress on future trips:
- Enable Find My iPhone or Find My Device before you travel — this must be set up in advance
- Write down your phone's IMEI number and store it separately (Settings > General > About on iPhone, or dial *#06# on any phone). You'll need it for police reports and insurance claims.
- Save your eSIM QR code email in a cloud email account you can access from any device — don't rely on only having it on your phone
- Set a strong passcode — Face ID and fingerprint are convenient, but a 6-digit passcode is your last line of defense
- Back up your phone to iCloud or Google before traveling so you don't lose photos and data along with the device
